A room full of morons circling in
Tensions thick, morals thin
Pretend to care, fake your feelings
The definition of unappealing
Beefcakes salivate as the bottle spins
Looking for something that is not love
Money, fame, all the above
Like young’uns in a bar nearing its closing
All this narcissistic posing
When they should just give up,
go home and rest
From this stock, you must pick one
So, make sure to taste all their tongues
Fill up all them hard drives full!!
Of small talk and useless bull
Is a scripted date any fun?
Can a one-night stand be written in?
Does that even count as one?
It must be hard to run a race
With a blinking camera jammed in your face
How much worse to find a best friend
To be your person ‘til the end
Someone to share a vulnerable embrace
An apartment, a gas bill, a car
A home, a child, mortal fears
Year
after year
after year
after year
…
Hell, I can barely share my words
With this here supportive, loving herd
The way I feel about romantic love
Picking another and mixing your blood
Watching it spring to life, twice, absurd
Decide to quit before a third
The other two, running around
Wreaking havoc, those lovely creatures
They are the impossible,
They do the impossible:
They somehow make me love her more
I despair for those whose worlds are shaped
By a life performed for crowds on tape
Unable to slam the door
On the masses screaming and demanding more
It’s hard enough to find
And keep a person
Without all that goddamn noise
But is “Romantic poetry” just the same?
Romantic only in its name
How could one sum up the love they’ve found?
Whilst giving shits about how it rhymes, looks, or sounds?
Not from the heart, but from a fist
Wielded by the zombies growling “play the hits!”
Dishonesty was always a fair trade for fame
And in this way trash tv
And romantic poetry
Are exactly the same
So maybe I’ll save my sympathy
For those not engaged in misogyny
They had a choice, they made their bed
Abandoned love and chose stardom instead
Playing out a boring mockery
Of the species of relationship that means
The very most to me
